What’s the Most Important Thing When It Comes To SEO?

round and round
Prevent SEO from becoming a mystery that never gets solved.

Pet Sitters: I get it.

SEO (search engine optimization) is a big mystery.

On the surface, you might have a firm grasp on exactly what needs to be done, but even if you have done those things, you may not see results.

And we all know how frustrating it could be to put in some work and not see the results you were expecting.

Today’s question may put you in a better direction to make some real progress on your SEO efforts.

(And at the end of the post, you’ll have an opportunity to work directly with me and Bella Vasta on taking SEO by the horns and see results literally within 30 days 🙂

SEO: Where In The World Do I Begin?

This is the question I received:
Josh, with the WordPress SEO plug in, what’s the one (or few) things you would do first to quickly rise in rankings? I realize the algorithms for SEO are complex with many factors involved so there’s no “one” thing but what do you think of first when constructing sites? Blogging? Titles and descriptions? Other?

This is a great question and a very important one.

First, let me clarify that there is no magic bullet to “quickly rise in the rankings.” I understand what you are asking, but I just want to be clear that SEO is a marathon, not a sprint.

No one thing (or no few things) will have you quickly rise in Google or allow you to remain in Google.

Correct SEO is a series of ongoing and consistent efforts. And guess what?

These efforts do not have to be difficult.

Here’s the bottom line: If you were to focus on nothing else, focus on creating valuable content. Period.

Literally put, content is the food of SEO.

Without proper meta tags in place, great page content can still rank high in Google for keywords.

However, without any content on the pages, or throughout your website, Google would have no reason to rank your pages even with the best meta description tags or titles in place.

Quick Tip About Headlines and Page Titles

Side Tip: While your title tags are important and should include a set of your keywords, you also want your title tag to be intriguing enough to appeal to the search user so she will click through from Google to read more.

For example, your page title becomes the big blue link that Google uses for people to click on in the search results.

Title tag as it appears in Google search results.

Which title tag would you be more interested and intrigued to read:

A) North Dakota Pet Sitter Offers Overnight Pet Care

B) George the German Shepherd No Longer Sobs and Whimpers Thanks to North Dakota Pet Sitter

Get it?

Title B would get me excited to read more. And it’s the same article as title A where you discuss how you now offer overnights and the big benefits it offers your furry clients.

Let’s focus on Page Content!

Page content – whether in the form of blog posts, articles, FAQ pages, videos, photos or any other sort of information that is useful to your visitors – is “the food of the search engines” right?

When you do a search on Google, you are looking for information. You are in need of the best answer to what you type into Google.

And it’s the search engine’s job to show you the best, most relevant page content for your search query.

This is why if you focus on nothing else, focus on adding good, relevant content that your ideal clients will appreciate.

If you are using WordPress, this is especially true since most of the meta tag work is done for you behind the scenes. If you are using my pet sitting website system, the SEO plugin is all set and ready to go. You can practically set it and forget it.
