What Does Makeup Have To Do With Pet Sitting?

Part 2 of our ‘What Can We Really Learn From Celebrities?’ series

makeupWhat do the phrases “mineral eye color, ultimate mascara, satin hands, tinted lip balm, and TimeWise age-fighting moisturizer” mean to you?

If you’re anything like my wife, you certainly recognize them as make up. More specifically, however, they are all part of the Mary Kay cosmetics product line.

Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay cosmetics, is recognized as one of America’s greatest and most successful female entrepreneurs.

She single-handedly paved a new path for women to take their place alongside men in the world of business. This endeavor led to a multibillion-dollar company that is still going strong today.

None of Mary Kay Ash’s success would have taken place if she didn’t do something about her then-current situation.

The Motivating Factor

In the early 1960s, Mary Kay Ash held a comfortable post in a direct selling business. She had been with that company for over 25 years. For the second time in a row, she was passed over for a well-deserved promotion to a less-deserving man in the company – a man she herself had trained.

Frustrated by the politics of the situation, Mary Kay Ash left that company and intended to spend some time writing a book that would help women gain the opportunities she herself was denied.

She got cracking writing the book at her kitchen table and soon noticed that what she had written was a business plan for her ideal company. In September 1963, she and her son formed Mary Kay Cosmetics with a $5000 investment.

“Remember, if you do the things you ought to do when you ought to do them, then someday you can do the things you want to do when you want to do them. Whatever you do or dream you can do – begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.” -Mary Kay Ash

Be Bold

You have a choice in life to accept your position or change it. If you choose to plug along in life hoping that someday something will magically change for the better, you will not get very far.

Always remember: when it comes to changing your circumstances, you have that power. Mary Kay Ash could have easily kept quiet after being passed over for another promotion by a man and remained unappreciated in the company.

Instead, she decided to take action and do something about it.

Ask yourself this honest question: how long will you remain in a position that is less than desirable before you do something about it, like Mary Kay Ash?

If your current circumstances lower the chances of success, you need to change them. If you’ve always dreamed of a better job, a better life or a better financial situation, changing your circumstances and starting your own business may be just the thing you need to succeed.

If you dream of growing your pet sitting business into a small empire, by all means get cracking. Most of the success stories we hear are from those who were once at a point in their lives when they had nothing.

They were not sure how they were going to survive, let alone become super rich and successful. But they did – simply by taking action, changing their circumstances and not giving up until they reached their goals.

The 3 must-haves in order to successfully change your circumstances

1) You must have a plan.

As the saying goes, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Seriously. If you do not have any plan in place to get yourself on track, there is no feasible way you can succeed. Plan for success.

2) You must have a destination.

While your plan is a great start, without a destination in mind, you will be moving about aimlessly. Think of it like a road trip or vacation. Let’s say you want to drive from New York to Chicago. Great. You now have the destination in mind and have to plan accordingly how you’ll get there.

3) You must have a coach or mentor.

All of the best athletes, politicians and business people have a coach or mentor they admire, respect and look up to. A word of advice, encouragement or a pep talk can keep you from derailing. Align yourself with someone who has been where you are and, more importantly, who is where you want to be!

Are You Just All Talk?

Many people just talk about wanting to pursue a more meaningful life while feeling stuck in their current job. They think they have no way out. They make excuses for not changing a part of their life because they’re scared. They are afraid of failure. Don’t be like them.

Mary Kay Ash spent 25 years at her job waiting for a promotion. When it didn’t come for the second time in a row, she went out and created her own opportunity.

Do whatever it takes to grab your own opportunity.
