Hi Josh,
Yes things have changed some but I love seeing how many more people are familar with professional pet sitting. I am in a smaller city and 15 years ago the vets were familiar but no one had stuck with it very long. I was glad I had so much experience with pets before starting my business. The work experience in vet hospitals especially really gave me credentials with the local vets. It took a lot to get the business off the ground so to speak. I had to give a detailed explanation about what pet sitting was whereas now many people have a certain understanding already. I had to work 2 other part time jobs before my mid day pet sitting took off and became very full time. I came a long before the internet was really much of a force and before cell phones were so popular. I put on a lot (30K+) miles on my car back then.
I guess they best part is that despite being in this so long I still love and enjoy it. The animals are still the best and I love the people. I have a great way to earn a living and I intend to stay with it another 15 years or more!

Welcome, Elizabeth! Wow, 15 years?! I'd love to hear how the industry may have evolved from your point of view.

Certainly, it wasn't as popular as an option then, was it? What part of the country are you in?

And yes, the Christmas cards idea is perfect!

Just discovered your blog today. Love the chance to catch up on things. I have been pet sitting for almost 15 years, but had dropped from full time to part when babies came! Now kind of ready to get back in the game.
I found that Christmas was a great time to send a handwritten card to say thank you for their business. I also used to bring around cookie trays to the vets who were great about giving me referrals.

Wow, Kim,

That sounds like such an obvious and simple thing to do, yet I never would have thought of it! It costs you nothing and I'm certain the clients are delighted with your thoughtful gesture.

Really clever idea. Thanks for sharing it.

Something I do in my Petsitting business is to leave the manufacturers coupons for the food or treats that I know the client dog or cat uses. Since I know what they use and like, its a much appreciated way of giving back.
