Day 17

Animal House Shelter, Inc rescues abused and neglected dogs and cats and rehabilitates them mentally & physically in order to place them with the best new family. We rescue 98% of our dogs from high ‘kill’ shelters, pounds and various animal control facilities in which they are usually listed as strays, and almost always scheduled to be euthanized.

We have been open since June 2002 and have rescued, rehabilitated and placed over 10,000 dogs and cats, to date, into their loving forever homes!

“We can’t see going out and purchasing a dog when so many dogs are being turned away by people who can’t take care of them,” says one man recently taking home a new best friend.

When thinking of a typical ‘shelter dog,’ one might imagine an untamed mutt who needs plenty of rehabilitation before it can be adopted out.

While dogs of all breeds and backgrounds find their way into the shelter system, a majority of animals as recently as 2008 were forced to the streets when a flood took over parts of Chicago.

The animal shelter took in dozens of perfect pets left homeless from these floods. These animals are all otherwise ready to be given another roof they can relax and play under.

Little Shelter Animal Adoption Center, Long Island, NY

Little Shelter Animal Adoption Center, one of Long Island’s oldest no-kill shelters, is dedicated to saving all companion animals whose lives are in jeopardy. Through rescue from kill facilities, rehabilitation of sick and un-socialized pets, and a 100% spay/neuter program, Little Shelter hopes to end pet overpopulation and place all dogs and cats in loving homes. Located in Huntington, Little Shelter is the only animal organization outside New York City that is a member of the Mayor’s Alliance.

When you’ve been saving lives since 1927, you can be sure there’s a lot to see, read and absorb on the Little Shelter Animal Rescue website. And be forewarned: with pages such as ‘Overlooked Dogs for Adoption,’ ‘Animal Sanctuary‘, and ‘Moving Pictures of Cats,’ your heart strings will be tugged at.

The Sponsorship program is for those who desperately want to help out, but do not have the means to adopt an animal in need.

A Place To Bark, Tennessee

A PLACE TO BARK is a no kill foster and adoption rescue dedicated to the welfare of animals and was founded by Bernie Berlin. Established in 2001, we mainly work with Animal Control Agencies, rescuing animals from high kill shelters and fostering them until they are healthy.

I run a full-time dog rescue, taking in the dogs that have been abandoned, abused or police confiscated. I foster, retrain, transport & adopt. Cats are also welcome at my rescue. I am drawn to the unwanted, unloved and misunderstood. Hoping to educate and effect change for the animals that do not have a voice of their own.

If you’ve ever had a preconceived idea of what a ‘shelter dog’ looks and acts like, may I suggest you visit A Place To Bark?!

Founder Bernie Berlin looks to have made this her life’s mission and with the smiles on every dog’s face, she seems to be doing a fantastic job.

Amazingly, Bernie makes the 9-hour trek every few weeks from Tennessee to Chicago with about 50 dogs who have been rehabed at her shelter. These dogs will be placed with the Anti Cruelty Society and be up for adoption.

Just watch the YouTube video below and notice how every dog is caught with a big ol’ grin on its face.

If I ever was going to open an animal shelter, this is who I would be learning the ropes from!

Fayetteville/Lincoln County Animal Shelter, Tennessee

We are the only Animal Shelter around in a 4 county area in a small rural town. Our Shelter is operated by the Humane Society of Lincoln County. We are dedicated to providing proper and humane treatment of all animals that come thru our doors. The Society was formed in 1985 by people distressed over the conditions at the local animal pound and concerned about the needs of orphaned, neglected and abused animals in the city and county.

Animal Protection Society of Durham, North Carolina

The mission of the APS of Durham is to educate the public about the humane care, treatment and well-being of all animals, to help stop pet overpopulation through the promotion of spay/neuter programs, and to find suitable adoptive homes for the animals in our care.

Editor’s Note:

One thing you’ll quickly notice about the Animal Protection Society of Durham is their commitment and focus on education.

Teaching kids and adults alike about responsible pet ownership is a perfect start to keeping animals out of the shelter system and into the homes of loving owners.

Another thing I greatly admire is their openness and honesty.

Take a portion of their answer to the question “Are you a no-kill shelter?”

The math is unalterable: if we take in 6,758 stray or abandoned animals each year, and we’re able to find homes for only 1,484 of these animals, that means that 5,274 animals have nowhere to go. We believe that given the circumstances, a painless death is the best choice among a limited set of awful choices.

Let’s help get those numbers down even more… Meet Stella.

Stella is listed as a 4-year old Boxer mix (who looks like she also may have some Pit Bull mixed in). As you know, I’m a big fan of the pit breed and would take Stella home in a minute.

She came to the shelter abused and neglected – nothing more than skin and bones – and as you’ll see in the video below, she is now ready to please and bond with her new owner.

Stella looks to be the perfect companion for an active owner, who could give her the second chance at life every dog greatly deserves.

Day 11: Brew City Dog Rescue

Brew City Dog Rescue, Milwaukee

Brew City Dog Rescue is a group of Milwaukee volunteers dedicated to finding loving homes for stray and abandoned dogs in the local area.

Many of the dogs we rescue are on “death row” (high risk for being put-down/euthanasia). Their only crime is that they do not have a loving family to care for them. We primarily receive dogs from local shelters and owner surrenders.

Editor’s Note:

What really caught my attention from the Brew City Dog Rescue was a recent post on their blog.

The group worked with students in an ad class at the Eisner Museum of Advertising and Design, and their task was to come up with an ad campaign for the rescue group to use.

Needless to say, the winning entry is brilliant, gets the point across and is being turned into brochures to hand out.

It takes the concept of recycling and, well, I think the picture speaks for itself…

New Beginnings Cat and Dog Rescue, St. Louis

Was created by “everyday-ordinary” folks trying to do whatever we can to alleviate suffering in the animals God places in our life’s path. We are small but earnest.

Our Motto: Rescue – Rehab – Expose – Inform – Adopt. Our goal is to prevent the euthanasia of any dog or cat that we are able by rescuing, placing in foster care to begin rehabilitation and physical care including veterinary, training and behavior modification needs.

New Beginnings Cat and Dog Rescue was able to rescue a terrified Australian Shepherd who only knew life spent in a dark crate, while giving birth too many times.

Naturally so, Breeze was skittish, frightened and did not trust people. Over the course of two years, Breeze has made tremendous progress and is currently living a happier life with a foster family.

Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County, Indiana

My goals as your Animal Welfare League Executive Director are many, but a primary thread that weaves through all those goals of mine, includes a strong devotion to the animals in this shelter. I happen to like the word “shelter” for that is exactly what we hope to provide…a place of safety and shelter for the animals in our care. Our mission statement is important. I would like to share it with you. The MISSION of the Animal Welfare League is to provide first-class care for the animals in our charge and to challenge our community to do the same.

The YouTube video below is from October 2008, when a local news station did a story on the Animal Welfare League. It primarily focuses on a shelter’s all too often dilemma: overcrowding.

It’s simple logic – too many pets coming in, not enough going out to a good home. Admittedly, the shelter has no choice but to put down otherwise good animals that, if room permitted, would have had more time to spend on this earth.

No matter how you feel about “kill vs no-kill” shelters, the bottom line is the same: Just 17% of pet owners rescue an animal from a pet shelter, while the remaining 83% opt for a breeder (most commonly a ‘puppy mill’).

You will be surprised at the quality of dogs and cats at most rescue groups in your area. My wife and I recently rescued a stunning Golden Retriever/Lab mix who couldn’t be more sweet. Give a shelter in your area a chance.

Day 8: Tri-Country Animal Rescue

Tri-County Animal Rescue, North Carolina

We started Tri-County Animal Rescue in 1998. We take animals to adoption events each weekend. We help our community with stray animals, assist with low cost spay/neuter, provide assistance with pet food for those in need, visit schools to educate children about animal welfare issues, work with Boy/Girl Scouts, partner with the Court Systems Community Service Work program, visit local nursing homes and much more.

Editor’s Note:

It’s difficult not to get choked up and emotional when you read through the Tri-County Animal Rescue pages. The wonderful organization has taken in (and rehabilitated) plenty of animals in dire need, from a dog left behind when its owners decided to move to a sweet Pit Bull named Gypsy used as bait in a dog fighting ring then left on the side of the road left to die.

For the record, Gypsy has since been honored by the Southeastern Pit Bull Association and named their Dog of the Year!

With their “Pet of the Week” area of their website, you are sure to be able to bring home the new love of your life. This video says it all…
